Common Troubleshooting Guide
1. Insufficient Truck Power: The internal check valve within the fuel transfer pump is worn and fails to seal tightly, or its built-in spring has suffered fatigue and fractured; this results in fuel transfer pressure and flow rates that fall below required specifications. Under heavy loads, while climbing inclines, or at high engine speeds, the engine suffers from severe fuel starvation-manifesting as speed limitation, the emission of black smoke, or a lack of response when the accelerator pedal is depressed.
2. Difficulty Starting After Parking: A minute air leak has developed within the fuel transfer pump, or the check valve has failed. Consequently, after the vehicle is shut off and left parked overnight, all the diesel fuel within the supply lines drains back into the fuel tank. If it becomes necessary to manually prime the pump before every start-up in order to get the engine running, this typically indicates that the fuel transfer pump or the manual priming pump has lost pressure and requires replacement of the entire assembly.
3. Oil Dilution: In certain fuel transfer pumps driven directly by mechanical tappets, if the lip seal (oil seal) located at the pushrod becomes aged or worn, high-pressure diesel fuel will leak directly past the pushrod and into the engine's valve chamber or crankcase. The contamination of engine oil with diesel fuel causes the oil to rapidly lose viscosity and fail to provide adequate lubrication; in severe cases, this can lead to bearing wear or even result in "cylinder scoring"-necessitating a major engine overhaul.
