FUNCTION
1. Shortened Brake Response Time: If the brake air supply were routed directly from the foot brake valve in the cab to the rear wheels, the long transmission distance would result in braking delays. Upon receiving a signal, the relay valve immediately opens a large-diameter passage locally at the rear axle, directing compressed air from the air reservoir directly into the brake chambers.
2. Rapid Brake Release: When the driver lifts their foot off the brake pedal, the residual high-pressure air within the brake chambers must be exhausted as quickly as possible. As the brakes are released, the air pressure in the control line drops. Driven by this pressure differential, the internal diaphragm within the relay valve switches instantaneously, venting the air from the rear brake chambers locally-directly through the exhaust port located at the bottom of the valve-without the need for the air to flow back to the cab. This ensures a clean and crisp brake release, preventing brake drag and wheel hub overheating.
3. Achieving Proportional Air Pressure Amplification:** The brake chambers require precise air pressure to accurately control the magnitude of the braking force. Mechanism: The internal piston structure of the relay valve features a precisely engineered surface area ratio.
4. Functioning as a Parking Brake: On Isuzu pump truck chassis, this valve typically operates in conjunction with a spring-applied, air-released (fail-safe) braking system. When the parking brake lever is engaged, the valve vents the air pressure from the brake chambers, allowing powerful springs at the rear axle to mechanically lock the wheels; conversely, when the parking brake is released, the valve supplies air pressure to the chambers to compress the springs and disengage the brakes, thereby ensuring that the multi-ton pump truck remains securely stationary during pumping operations.
