Working Principle
Four-Stroke Operating Cycle
A diesel engine completes one full operating cycle through four distinct strokes; during each cycle, the crankshaft rotates twice (720°), and the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
1. Intake Stroke:The piston moves downward from Top Dead Center (TDC), and the intake valve opens. Air-or compressed air from a turbocharger-enters the cylinder through the intake manifold.
2. Compression Stroke:Both the intake and exhaust valves close, and the piston moves upward, rapidly compressing the air.
3. Power Stroke:As the compression stroke nears its end, the fuel injector sprays high-pressure diesel fuel into the cylinder in a fine mist. Upon contact with the high-temperature air, the diesel immediately auto-ignites and combusts explosively, generating high-temperature, high-pressure gases that drive the piston downward to produce mechanical power output. This constitutes the primary difference between a diesel engine and a gasoline engine.
4. Exhaust Stroke:The exhaust valve opens, and the piston moves upward, expelling the combustion byproducts (exhaust gases) from the cylinder to prepare for the next operating cycle.
